The effect of coconut sugar on cariogenic traits in streptococcus mutans

Aim: The consumption of foods rich in sugar is linked to several non-communicable diseases, including dental caries. Coconut has systemic benefits due its lower glycemic indexes (GI) than other table sugars. However, there currently no data regarding cariogenic potential. This study aimed evaluate the effect coconut on acidogenicity and adhesion Streptococcus mutans vitro, compared sugarcane products. Materials methods: Aliquots cultures S. UA159 were resuspended a buffer solution enriched with sugar, crystal (refined sugar), minimally processed (demerara light brown maskavo dark as well positive (sucrose) negative controls. decrease pH corresponding area under curve (AUC; cm2) evaluated for analysis acidogenicity. was incubated BHI supplemented each percentages microbial calculated. After testing normality, one-way ANOVA test (Bonferroni post hoc) used compare AUC proportion group. Results: Regarding acidogenic potential, statistical differences found only between control versus all groups (p<0.001). Likewise, significant difference tested sugars (p>0.05). Discussion: Although are marketed “healthy products,” their amount frequency usage should be controlled. Conclusion: presents similar potential that products when evaluated. not indicated substitute sucrose activity.
